Garuda team has released a new version 200831 of Garuda Linux, which includes numerous updates and improvements to applications and desktop environments.
For those who don’t know, Garuda Linux is an Arch Linux-based rolling distribution focussing only on performance. But unlike Arch, it comes with a graphical Calamares installer and other advanced GUI tools like Garuda Settings Manager and Garuda Boot Repair for managing the system easily.
Another interesting feature of Garuda is Linux-zen kernel and Btrfs as a default filesystem with Zstd compression. Surprisingly, Garuda Linux also offers a variety of desktop environments such as KDE, GNOME, Xfce, Wayfire, LXQt-kwin, Deepin, and i3, which further comes in two editions: Ultimate and Lite.
Garuda Linux 200831: What’s New?
The newly refreshed version has shipped a number of changes to its GUI applications as well.
For example, Garuda Welcome app now has a toggle button for a number of use cases, such as easily switching to HiDPI Mode, GDM to Wayland, enabling systemwide adblocking via Adguard DNS, and for enabling/disabling the guest account.
The Garuda Network Assistant app has also received new buttons for restarting wireless connections like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The app can also now detect if the installed NetworkManager or Connman daemon is running or not.
If it’s not running, the app now shows a dialog that gives a button to start the service.
Another major addition to Garuda Linux is
pamac-all AUR package in the Ultimate edition, which brings support for the universal package management system Snap and Flatpak.
Among the applications and core component version upgrades, the latest Garuda 200831 now includes Linux-zen kernel 5.8.5, Mesa 20.1.6, NVIDIA 450.66, and Firefox 80. However, only the Ultimate version has got a new LibreOffice 7.0.
Moving forward, Garuda team has now added Shutdown, Restart, Firmware-Setup (UEFI) menu entries to the GRUB bootloader, and changed highlight text color in grub-theme-garuda to blue.
Lastly, speaking of desktop environment, version 200831 has changed theme to Whitesur-dark for KDE, GNOME, and Xfce desktop.
