Facebook sues two sites that ‘guaranteed’ Instagram likes and followers

For years now there have been these companies or Instagram accounts that promise to inflate users’ likes and followers. Some users did fall for the ‘trap’ and ended up sharing personal data with unknown accounts. To crack down on such companies, Facebook has sued two websites called Boostgram.com and Instant-fans.com
In a blog post, Jessica Romero, Director of Platform Enforcement and Litigation, Facebook, said, “We filed separate lawsuits in federal court against four individuals providing services intended to artificially inflate likes and followers of Instagram accounts, a practice known as fake engagement.”
Romero explained that Boostgram used a network of bots to automate the delivery of likes and followers of Instagram accounts –“On their website, Boostgram claimed to offer users a way to “increase Instagram exposure” – Boostgram profited from their services,” Romero said.
Similarly, Instant-fans.com also used a network of bots and automation software to deliver fake engagement to their customers’ Instagram accounts. Instant-fans.com also offered fake engagement services for Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest and other web services. “They provide fake engagement services to both individual customers as well as other fake engagement services known as “commercial resellers” of fake engagement,” said Romero.
Facebook had sent cease and desist letters to the defendants notifying the two entities that their activities violated Instagram’s Terms of Use, Policies, and Community Guidelines. “We are now filing suit to obtain a permanent injunction against the defendants, who have continued to violate our Terms,” said Romero.
Boostgram was run from New York by Sean Heilweil and Jarrett Lusso whereas Laila Abou Trabi and Robin Abou Trabi, based in Dubai, run the website instant-fans.
“Today’s legal actions demonstrate our ongoing commitment to protecting users, enforcing our policies and holding people accountable for abusing our services,” added Romero in the blog post.
