Tensions between Epic Games and tech giant Apple do not seem to be abating as in its latest move, the game company has announced a FreeFortnite Cup in favour of its ongoing campaign against Apple. The tournament will kick off on August 23 and winners will be eligible for Android devices like phones and tablets, but no Apple devices. The FreeFortnite Cup has been announced in favour of Epic’s #FreeFortnite campaign against the Cupertino-based tech giant.
This is a worldwide tournament and 1,200 non-Apple devices are to be distributed among the winners. Clearly, Epic wants Fortnite players to ditch Apple for the game.
Some of the prizes being offered are a OnePlus 8, a Galaxy Tab S7, a PlayStation 4 Pro, an Xbox One X, a Nintendo Switch and an Alienware laptop. An exclusive skin from the “Apple Man” Tart Tycoon and a “Free Fortnite” hat can also be won.
The thrust and riposte between the two companies has been going on ever since Apple banned Fortnite on the App Store due to the violation of its policies by Epic Games. Epic sued Apple (and Google too for the same move) and asked gamers to join its side. Now, Epic’s Unreal Engine on iOS and Mac is also in jeopardy as Apple plans to revoke Epic’s permissions on August 28. Epic filed a motion to stop Apple from doing so.
