Older iPhones get Covid-19 exposure notifications with iOS 12.5

Must read

Apple has today rolled out new software updates for all its gadgets — including its old iPhones. The Cupertino-based tech giant has released iOS 12.5 for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation) users.
With this update, Apple has rolled out the support for COVID-19 exposure notifications to older iPhones, iPads as well as iPod.
“iOS 12.5 lets you opt-in to the COVID-19 Exposure Notifications system for your iPhone. System availability depends on support from your local public health authority,” said Apple about the iOS 12.5 update.
The company also mentions that this update comes with additional “security updates” and that the release is recommended for all users.
To recall, this feature was rolled out back in September to enable public health authorities to use smartphones to assist in contact tracing without having to build an app.
Apple and Google submit a small configuration file to Apple and Google which will then be used to set up systems that phone owners can opt in to in order to determine whether they have been near someone who has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
