Researchers from Stanford University and Samsung have managed to create a 10,000PPI OLED display, as per a Stanford blog post. The new display architecture is reportedly better than modern displays when it comes to PPI. Modern day smartphones have got a PPI (pixel-per-inch) range that hasn’t even reached 1,000PPI.
The display could arrive on future TVs, smartphones and VR/AR devices. As per the blog post, such high resolution displays would be especially beneficial for the VR/AR devices with their screens inches away from our eyes. The more the pixel density, the more compactly they are packed per inch, which is said to lead to more life-like, sharp and realistic images. The 10,000PPI display is also claimed to be brighter and have more colour accuracy than the current displays.
As per the blog post: “The advance is based on research by Stanford University materials scientist Mark Brongersma in collaboration with the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).
“We’ve taken advantage of the fact that, on the nanoscale, light can flow around objects like water. The field of nanoscale photonics keeps bringing new surprises and now we’re starting to impact real technologies. Our designs worked really well for solar cells and now we have a chance to impact next generation displays.”, the post quotes Brongersma.
Samsung’s next step is going to begin working at full-sized 10,000PPI displays, notes the blog post.
