Terminator, a feature-packed terminal emulator for Linux, has reached version 2.0 stable.
The application includes features such as split terminals (arranging terminals in grids_, saving and restoring custom layouts, terminal grouping, support for plugins, and customizable keyboard shortcuts.
After more than 4 years of work, the developers have finally finished migrating Terminator from Gtk2 to Gtk3, and from Python2 to Python3, with the latest Terminator 2.0 release.
Besides this important migration, the latest Terminator 2.0 also includes a few new features, like the ability to use an image as the terminal background, a feature that was missing from the Gtk3 version.
You set an image as the terminal background from the Terminator
Preferences -> Profiles -> Background. From there you can also choose the background image transparency. It’s important to note that you need to restart Terminator for the changes to have any effect.
Other enhancements in the Terminator 2.0 release include:
- Added an option to show bold text in bright colors (
Profiles -> Colors)
- Keybindings for creating group in current tab and opening preferences window, as well as keybinding improvements
- Preference to disable
Ctrl + Scrollfont size change
- Allow to open layout in a new tab
- Make a submenu of Layouts in the popup menu

Back in April 2020, Terminator has moved to GitHub, being developed by a new team. The new developers mention that there’s still a lot to do, and ask for help “to keep Terminator available for your daily use“. If you’re interested in contributing, visit its GitHub page.
There are no Terminator 2.0 binaries available to download, so head over to the Install page to see how to install it (or even run it directly from the folder where you’ve extracted it without installing it). I’d like to note that on my Ubuntu 20.10 desktop, some files install in the wrong location when installing Terminator from source, so there’s no application menu entry and icons (bug reported).
