The global notebook PC market has seen a 27% year-on-year growth, claims a latest report by Strategy Analytics. As per the report the increase is a result of the response from both consumer and commercial segments and subsequent government assistance. The report claims that people across the world struggled to stay productive in work and school in the first wave of the pandemic. “Consumers, commercial clients, and schools scrambled to purchase mobile productivity devices once thought to be redundant,” added the report.
As per the report, the market was led by Lenovo with 13.6 million units shipped in this quarter. It recorded a 17% quarterly growth year over year and shipped 25% of the total notebook PCs that were shipped.
At the second position was HP that recorded the highest quarterly growth annually among all the top 5 vendors of 42%. The company constituted 24.8% of the total sales of the period and together with Lenovo, the company had almost 50% of the total notebook PC market.
At the third and fourth position were Dell and Apple, both of which had a 21% growth in annually as compared to the same quarter. While Dell shipped 8.4 million units, Apple shipped 4.6 million units in Q2.
Lastly, Acer ranked fifth on the global vendors in the notebook PC market, however, it had the second-highest growth of 41%.
Chirag Upadhyay, senior research analyst, Strategy Analytics, said, “The main reason for all vendors’ success in improving supply chain demand is by working closely with channel and retail partners. Most vendors started the quarter by delivering panic buy/backlog orders which were held back in March due to the lockdown imposed on the majority of the countries. However, as the quarter progressed, all the vendors managed to fulfil customers’ requirements on time by working closely with channel partners (including retail) to deliver products more efficiently and in a timely manner.”
He continued, “There is definitely risk of prolonged economic hardship and a downturn in demand in countries still dealing with the first wave of infections, but this pessimism could spread quickly if more countries enter a second wave of infections like Japan, Hong Kong, Australia.”
