Wires. They are literally everywhere — phone chargers, laptop chargers, earbuds chargers, smartwatch chargers — and are somehow entangled in most people’s lives. Here’s where the need of a wireless charger comes in. While wireless chargers have been around for a while, they still aren’t really mainstream. In this buying guide, we will tell you all the key things to know before buying a wireless charger:

What type of charger do you need and are available

The two most common wireless chargers are: pads and stands. It depends on what you are looking for. If you need to keep the wireless charger on a desk, then the stand might be a better idea. However, if you want to keep it on your nightstand, then a wireless charging pad could be more suitable.

What type of technology is used in wireless chargers?

Globally, the wireless charging standard used by brands is Qi. Most smartphones come with Qi-enabled tech that allows devices to wireless charge them.

How much power does a wireless charger support?

You should get at least a 10W wireless charger for your smartphones. Brands offer charging output between 5W and 10W. Do keep in mind that phones are designed to wireless charge at certain speed only. For instance, Apple iPhone can charge up to maximum speed of 7.5W while Samsung’s phones charge at 9W. Most other Android phones offer up to 10W of charging speed.

How fast does wireless charging work?

As smartphone brands start shipping fast chargers — or no chargers in case of Apple — out of the box, wireless chargers are comparatively quite slow. Any Qi charging pad or stand takes quite some time to fully charge a device.

Can you charge other devices — apart from phones — as well?

Yes, you can charge true wireless earbuds, smartwatches as well through a wireless charging pad. Get a wireless charging pad that offers support for charging multiple devices.

Do wireless charging pads/stands work on a phone with a case?

Mostly they do as long as cases are quite thin. Brands will let buyers know if the cases work through wireless chargers or not.

What brands’ wireless chargers you can buy?

You can get wireless chargers from smartphone brands like Samsung, Google, Realme, Xiaomi to third-party accessory makers like Belkin, Anker and others.

How much do wireless chargers cost?

Wireless chargers cost anywhere between Rs 2,000-Rs 12,000 depending on brand and capabilities. A wireless charging pad from Belkin can cost around Rs 3,500 but will charge just one device. Samsung’s multi device charging pads can cost more than Rs 12,000 as well.
