Facebook-owned WhatsApp has announced that it will charge businesses for some services on WhatsApp Business app. Facebook did not reveal the pricing details but businesses will have to pay for certain services. WhatsApp for Business app will continue to remain completely free for the end users.
The WhatsApp Business app allows small businesses and startups to connect with customers and sell to them directly. Along with charging businesses, Facebook said that it will be investing to add more features.
Facebook is also add a shopping button on WhatsApp which will be coming to India later. With this button, people will be able to add items to a cart, and check out, right within WhatsApp.

WhatsApp for Business will also add new features that will allow buyers to see products inside their chat boxes itself in the form of catalogues. “We will expand ways for people to check out available products and make purchases right from a chat. We also want to make it easier for businesses to integrate these features into their existing commerce and customer solutions. This will help many small businesses who have been most impacted in this time,” said WhatsApp in an official statement.
Facebook also plans to offer hosting services. This will provide a new option to businesses to manage their WhatsApp messages. “This will make it easier for small and medium size businesses to get started, sell products, keep their inventory up to date, and quickly respond to messages they receive – wherever their employees are,” it added.
WhatsApp Business was launched in 2018 and Facebook claims that 175 million people message a WhatsApp Business account every day. This is Facebook’s first attempt to generate direct revenue from WhatsApp services. The company feels that it is right time go ahead with its monetisation plans as people are using messaging apps to connect to businesses more than ever.
