The Picture-In-Picture mode, which allows you to watch a video in a small window while doing other stuff on your smartphone, is one of the best features of iOS 14.

It now seems that the latest Picture-In-Picture functionality won’t work with YouTube shortly after the launch of Apple’s iOS 14 update, unless you have paid for its premium service.

Sadly, the iOS app on YouTube still does not support image-in-picture, which is why people turn to Safari to do it. But YouTube, unless you are a Premium user, presumably took notice of this and immediately disabled it on YouTube.com.

How To Access Picture-In-Picture Feature?

  • Access an app where you can also watch videos like Twitter or WhatsApp and play the video in full-screen mode.
  • Now you’ll see a picture-in-picture mode button on the top right side.
  • Once you click on the button, you’ll be able to watch the video while you access the rest of the app

How to access picture-in-picture mode for YouTube as a non-Premium user?

  • Access YouTube.com on Safari and choose a video to watch.
  • Select the “aA” icon available on the top left side and select “Request Desktop Website”
  • You’ll now be able to access picture-in-picture mode.

In addition to the above, if the YouTube video is embedded on an external website, the picture-in-picture will also work. For instance, if you view a video from our own website, you can access the feature. If you are using an iPad, Picture-in – Picture mode works with YouTube videos on Safari, regardless of whether you have a free or Premium account.

The choice to play videos in the background is only for YouTube premium users. If this is just a bug, or if YouTube deliberately disabled the functionality, it’s still uncertain.
